The unique geology of many parts of the United Kingdom has made for an ample number of caving opportunities. Although hiking, cycling and other popular activities are great ways to see the countryside of the UK, caving allows you to gain a whole new perspective on this incredible land. Whether you’re an avid and experienced caver – or if you’ve never so much as set foot in a cave – there is a true plethora of options in several different regions of the UK. If you’ve been thinking about getting into caving, consider a few of the following areas for inspiration:

  • Yorkshire Dales – The Yorkshire Dales are probably the most well-known place to enjoy a wide array of caving opportunities in the United Kingdom. There are dozens of caves along the hillsides here, and if you’d like to start exploring them you should seek accommodations in Ingleton. From there, you’ll be able to gain access to the largest array of caves and should be able to find something that will hold your interest.
  • Mendip Hills – Large sections of limestone have been eroded away by the forces of water to create a series of stunning caves in the Mendip Hills. Britain’s largest underground river system also flows through this region, making it especially unique. Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge are the two points where the public can gain access to these caves, and a visit here makes for a great – and adventurous – holiday.
  • Devon – Along the River Dart, several small but interesting caves are available for exploration. From the archeological remains that have been found in Kents Cavern to the Beer Quarry Caves and their long mining tradition, there’s a bit of something for everyone here.
  • County Fermanagh – Northern Ireland is home to many prime caving areas; head over to County Fermanagh to explore Noon’s Hole, Badger Pot and the Boho Caves.
  • South Wales – By finding last minute hotel deals in South Wales, you can set off on a prime caving adventure. Whether you choose to explore Ogof Draenen – the longest cave system in Wales – or the intriguingly decorated Otter Hole, you’ll have an unforgettable time in the labyrinthine caves of this part of the UK. By saving big on last minute accommodation, you can also keep well within your travel budget as you make your way around the main caving sites.
